The Indian Navy has concluded a contract for the construction of 04 x 500T Self Propelled Fuel Barges with Shoft Shipyard Private Limited, Thane (MSME Shipyard) on 02 March 2026.
The agreement marks another significant step in strengthening indigenous shipbuilding capabilities through Self Propelled Fuel Barges designed to support critical naval operations.
The contract for these Self Propelled Fuel Barges reflects the Indian Navy’s continued commitment to enhancing operational readiness while promoting domestic manufacturing.
These barges are being developed as part of the Government of India’s flagship initiatives, “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” reinforcing the push toward self-reliance in defence production.
According to official details, the 500T Self Propelled Fuel Barges will be constructed in compliance with the Classification Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
Adherence to IRS standards ensures that the Self Propelled Fuel Barges meet stringent safety, quality, and performance benchmarks required for naval auxiliary vessels.

The primary role of the Self Propelled Fuel Barges will be replenishment of fuel to ships and submarines in harbour and at anchorage.
